श्री रवीन्द्र कुमार दास ने ‘मेरी बात’ में कहा है कि इस कविता में कुछ तो ऐसा है जो सारी दुनिया के पाठक, सहृदय और आलोचक उससे बिंधे हुए हैं! यह प्रश्न और जिज्ञासा उन्हें मेघदूत की उस आंतरिक दुनिया में ले गई जहां यह कविता के समय, समाज और आदमी के साथ सतत संवाद में है। इस क्रम में उन्हें जड़-वैदुष्य परंपरा से लड़ना पड़ा है और उसी लड़ाई में उन्हें आज की लय और भाषा मिल गई है, कविता फिर से जी उठी है।
यह अनुवाद नहीं, पुनःसृजन है। अनुवादक की निगाह और संवेदना, उन मर्मों के भीतर तक धँसी है जहां मिट्टी, हल, किसान और फूल चुनती युवतियों के श्रम-स्वेद-सिंचित मुख से मेघ परिचय कर रहा है –

कमाल सा सुन्दर मुख

फिर उसी सहमे से उनसे

रवीन्द्र ने देख लिया है कि कविता में धनपतियों – सामंतों के विलासी सुख के साथ श्रम-सिंचित सौन्दर्य का गहरा संघर्ष निरंतर चल रहा है। इस विश्व प्रसिद्ध कविता का यह गहन जीवन सौन्दर्य है। ‘मेघदूत’ की यह पुनर्रचना आज के सहृदय के साथ खूब बात करती है।

जिन कवियों के कवित्व के आधार पर भारतीय साहित्य विश्व साहित्य में अपनी श्रेष्ठता का दावा कर सकता है, उनमें महाकवि कालिदास सर्वप्रमुख हैं। कालिदास प्रणीत ‘मेघदूतम’ विश्व – साहित्य में ऐन्द्रिकता के उद्दाम आवेग की उल्लसित अभिव्यक्ति के लिए अग्रगण्य है। इसमें अंतर्निहित भावना और कल्पना की भूमि पर सृजित मनोहरछंद युक्त अर्थचारुता से दूत-काव्य-परम्परा पल्लवित एवं पुष्पित होती है।
अलकानगरी के अधिपति कुबेर का दास, ‘मेघदूतम्’ का काव्य-नायक, यक्ष सज़ा स्वरूप गृह निष्कासित होकर रामगिरि पहुंचने के बाद, विरहाग्नि के ताप में झुलसते हुए अपनी नवेली पत्नी यक्षिणी के पास अपनी पीड़ाजनित अभीप्सा और सांत्वना संदेश के लिए, कोई और उपाय न देखकर, मेघ का सहारा लेता है। अपने गृह स्थान के मार्ग को समझाने के क्रम में, रामगिरि से अलकानगरी के मध्य के भूगोल के अंग-उपांग, ऋतु, प्रकृति, पर्यावरण एवं पारिस्थितिकी के वैशिष्ट्य का वर्णन यक्ष के संदेश के समान महत्त्व का लक्षित होता है।
कालिदास जैसे महान कवि द्वारा सृजित उल्लासातिरेक, रस एवं भाव को संप्रेषित करने वाली भाषा की दूसरी भाषा में दुर्लभ कायांतरण की कल्पना की जा सकती है। ‘मेघदूतम’ की भाषिक किमियागिरी इसके काव्यार्थ सरीखा ही काव्य-प्रयोजन से संबद्ध है। इसलिए इसकी ध्वनि साम्यता के साथ दूसरी भाषा में तुक एवं ताल का मिलान बेहद दुरुह कर्म है। संस्कृत साहित्य के गहरे अध्येता एवं रसिक, हिंदी-कवि रवीन्द्र कुमार दास ने महाकवि कालिदास की इस कृति को आज की भाषा-संवेदना में पुनर्सृजित किया है। परिणाम-स्वरुप यह कृति ‘मेघदूतम’ से “कहा यक्ष ने सुनो मेघ तुम” में कायांतरित होकर हमारे देश-काल की काव्य-संवेदना में गति और आकार प्राप्त कर ली है।
क्लासिक साहित्य को समकालीन बनाने के इस कवि- कर्म के लिए रवींद्र कुमार दास की सराहना होनी चाहिए।
